The tale about pride, illusion, mercy and love begins in a quiet Parisian home where an old soldier lies gravely ill. He is a veteran of the great army of Napoleon Bonaparte, and like many of his generation, his heart still burns with fierce devotion to his nation,  France.

Though his body is weak and failing, his spirit remains proud and patriotic. Outside, however, France is passing through dark days. The city of Paris is surrounded, and the nation is suffering during the terrible Franco-Prussian War. The old man does not know the truth.

Because of his fragile condition, his loving daughter fears that the harsh reality of France’s defeat would break his heart. To protect him, she and the family doctor decide to weave a gentle illusion. Each day they bring him cheerful news, news that French troops are advancing, that victories are being won, and that the enemy is retreating.

The old soldier listens with shining eyes, his pride swelling. In his imagination he sees the glorious French army marching triumphantly toward Berlin.

Meanwhile, the truth outside the room is very different. Paris is starving and suffering under siege. The Prussian army grows stronger, and defeat looms over France. Yet inside that quiet sickroom, a small world of hope and patriotism survives, carefully protected by the tender lies of those who love the dying man.

The old soldier grows happier with every report of these imagined victories. He dreams of the moment when French soldiers will enter Berlin in triumph. His faith in his country remains unshaken to the very end.

At last, one day, the inevitable moment arrives. The old man dies peacefully, believing that France is victorious and that the enemy has been defeated. His daughter and the doctor, though sorrowful, feel a quiet comfort. Their compassionate deception allowed the old soldier to leave the world with his pride and hope intact. @✒️GG🗡️
