In a sunny town called Oran, life moves in a dull but comfortable routine. People work, earn money, gossip, and dream of small pleasures.

No one thinks much about life beyond their daily habits. It is a town without imagination, until something strange begins to happen.

One day, dead rats start appearing in the streets. At first, it seems like a small nuisance. But soon, the number of dead rats grows, and then something worse follows, people begin to fall sick. High fever, swelling, terrible weakness,  and then death.

Slowly, fear creeps into the hearts of the townspeople.

A calm and thoughtful doctor, Dr. Bernard Rieux, begins to see the truth before others do. This is no ordinary illness, it is the plague, but here is the strange thing: even when danger is clear, people refuse to believe it. The authorities hesitate. The citizens continue their routines. It is as if they think, “Such terrible things cannot happen to us, " until one day,they can no longer deny it.

The gates of Oran are shut. No one can leave. No one can enter. The town is cut off from the world. Now begins the real story, not just of disease, but of human beings.

Inside the locked town, we meet different people, each reacting to the plague in their own way. There is Jean Tarrou, a thoughtful outsider who keeps a diary. He tries to understand what makes people good or evil, and he quietly organizes volunteer groups to help the sick.

There is journalist Raymond Rambert, who is desperate to escape the city and reunite with the woman he loves. At first, he thinks only of his personal happiness, but slowly, something changes inside him.

There is Joseph Grand, a simple, shy man struggling to write the perfect sentence. He seems unimportant, yet his quiet perseverance becomes a kind of heroism.

And there is Father Paneloux, who gives sermons, first declaring that the plague is a punishment from God, but later, when he witnesses innocent suffering, his faith is shaken.

As days pass, the plague tightens its grip. Families are separated. Lovers are kept apart. Death becomes common. The town, once busy and ordinary, turns silent and heavy with grief.

Through all this, Dr. Rieux keeps working tirelessly. He does not speak of hope or despair—he simply does his duty. For him, the fight against suffering is not about winning, it is about not giving in.

Through his story. Camus shows us that life can be absurd, meaning that terrible things can happen without reason. The plague does not choose between good or bad people. It strikes blindly.

But even in such a world, human beings have a choice. To give up, or to stand together and fight.

Slowly, almost quietly, things begin to change. The number of deaths decreases. The sickness loosens its grip. The gates of Oran are opened again. Joy returns, but it is a different kind of joy, touched by memory and loss. People rush to embrace their loved ones. The city comes alive once more.  Dr. Rieux although knows something important, something the others may forget. The plague never truly disappears. It waits, hidden, in the corners of the world and even within human hearts, in cruelty, ignorance, and indifference. One day, it may rise again. For Albert Camus, plague was both a fact of life and a powerful metaphor for the human condition. Camus engaged most explicitly and extensively with the subject of plagued mind of humanity.
