Marcel is practical, absorbed in his work, and pays little attention to his wife’s inner world. As they travel together, Janine senses a growing distance between them. She feels invisible, almost forgotten, as if her life has shrunk into dull habits and silent disappointments.

One evening, after arriving in a small desert town, Janine climbs the fortress walls overlooking the vast Sahara. From that height she sees the immense desert stretching endlessly under the cold night sky. The silence and the boundless horizon stir something powerful within her. For the first time in many years, she feels a sudden surge of freedom and passion. The desert seems alive, vast and eternal, and she feels herself drawn into its mysterious energy.

Later that night, unable to sleep, Janine quietly leaves the hotel and returns alone to the fortress. The night is still and immense, filled with stars. Standing there, surrounded by the infinite desert, she experiences an overwhelming moment of emotional and almost spiritual liberation. She opens herself to the vastness of the world, the cold wind, the endless sand, the silent sky.

 In that moment she feels a kind of union with the desert, an intense and intimate surrender to life itself.

This is why the story calls her “adulterous.” Her betrayal is not with another man, but with the world beyond her marriage.

In the silent embrace of the desert, she gives herself to something larger than her ordinary life.

When she returns to the hotel room, Marcel is sleeping. Janine lies beside him again, but she is no longer quite the same. Tears fall quietly from her eyes—not entirely of sadness, but from the strange realization of what she has felt and what she must now return to.
