Long ago, in the sunny town of Avignon in southern France, there lived a cheerful and good-natured pope named Pope Boniface. The people of the town loved him dearly, for he was kind, patient, and always ready to laugh.

Among the pope’s many possessions, there was one creature he cherished greatly—his beautiful mule. The animal was gentle, graceful, and carefully groomed. Every day, when the pope rode through the streets, the mule carried him proudly while the townspeople watched with admiration.

But not everyone admired the mule with respect. In the town there lived a mischievous young fellow named Tistet Védène. Tistet was handsome, clever, and famous for playing tricks. Unfortunately, he had a habit of mocking those who were too kind to punish him.

One day, seeing the pope’s mule standing quietly in the courtyard, Tistet’s playful but cruel nature tempted him. He crept up behind the poor animal and twisted its tail, tugged at its ears, and teased it mercilessly. The mule, though strong and spirited, remembered the gentle discipline of its master and did not retaliate.

The pope soon heard about the insult done to his beloved mule. But instead of becoming angry, he simply smiled calmly and said nothing. Tistet thought he had escaped punishment and continued his carefree life, laughing about his trick.

Yet the pope was wiser than the young man imagined. Quietly, he said that the mule would remember the insult—and that one day, the mule itself would take revenge.

Years passed. Time moved on as it always does. Tistet grew older and eventually became an important official in the church. One day he came proudly to visit the pope’s palace.

As fate would have it, the pope’s mule was there in the courtyard. The mule recognized the man instantly. After all those years, it had not forgotten.

When Tistet passed close by, the mule suddenly lashed out with a powerful kick. The blow knocked the proud man into the air and sent him tumbling across the courtyard.

The onlookers burst into laughter, and even the pope could not help smiling gently. The mule had finally delivered the punishment that patience had waited so long to give. ✒️GG🗡️
