🧑‍🍼Mrs Dalloway 🧑‍🍼 by Virginia Woolf ✒️ Retold by 🪶 Raconteur Guru Gurunay🗡️

The story unfolds not across years, but within the delicate span of a single June day in London, yet within that day,  an entire lifetime is lived.

Morning arrives gently, and with it steps Clarissa Dalloway into the bright, breathing streets. She is to host a party that evening, and as she walks to buy flowers, the city hums around her, omnibuses rumble, shop windows gleam. The Big Ben tolls, measuring time like a quiet, relentless heartbeat. But Clarissa is not merely arranging a gathering, she is moving through memories.

Her thoughts drift backward, to Bourton, to the girl she once was, to the intensity of youth and possibility. There was Peter Walsh, impulsive and restless, who loved her deeply but whom she refused. Instead, she chose the steadier, safer path with Richard Dalloway, a choice she both accepts and quietly questions.

Beneath her composed exterior lies a sensitive awareness of life’s fragility, a feeling that joy and loneliness are never far apart.

Meanwhile, moving through the same city, but in a very different inner world, is Septimus Warren Smith. A veteran of the Great War, he is haunted by what he has seen and lost.

The world around him feels unreal, filled with voices and visions. His wife, Lucrezia Smith, tries desperately to anchor him to ordinary life, but he is slipping beyond reach.

Where Clarissa moves through memory with a kind of wistful grace, Septimus is trapped in memory’s torment.

As the day advances, their lives never intersect in body, but in spirit, they are deeply connected. Both stand at the edge of existence, asking what it means to live, to feel, to endure.

Doctors arrive to “cure” Septimus, but their cold authority only deepens his despair. Unable to bear the loss of his inner truth, he makes a final, desperate act, choosing death over surrender.

Evening falls, and Clarissa’s party begins. The rooms fill with laughter, with conversation, with the careful choreography of social life. Familiar faces appear. Peter returns, still carrying his old love,  Richard moves with quiet affection, the past and present mingle like soft music in the air.

Then, amid the brightness of the gathering, Clarissa hears of Septimus’s death, a stranger to her, yet suddenly, profoundly known. She withdraws for a moment, alone, reflecting.

She does not see his act as madness, but as a kind of defiance, a refusal to let the world crush the soul. In that moment, she feels both the nearness of death and the sharp, luminous intensity of being alive.

And so she returns to her party, not unchanged, but awakened. Life, fleeting and fragile, continues. The clocks keep striking, the city breathes, and Clarissa, poised between joy and sorrow, steps once more into the stream of it all.

Thus, in a single day, Virginia Woolf reveals the vast inner landscapes of human existence, where memory, time, and consciousness flow together like a quiet, ceaseless tide. @🪶GG🗡️
