⚔️A Farewell to Arms⚔️ by Ernest Hemingway✒️ Retold by 🪶 Raconteur Guru Gurunay🗡️

It is the time of the First World War, and in the Italian countryside, the young American lieutenant, Frederic Henry, serves as an ambulance driver. The war, to him, feels distant at first—more a landscape than a cause, something that passes like the seasons. Soldiers march, dust rises, and life moves in a strange half-sleep between danger and routine.

Into this muted world enters Catherine Barkley, an English nurse, tall and composed, carrying within her the shadow of a lost love.

When Frederic meets her, what begins as a light, almost playful flirtation, something to distract from the dull brutality around them, slowly deepens into something far more serious. At first, Frederic does not even recognize it as love, for him it is a game, a refuge. But Catherine, with her quiet intensity, turns it into something real, something binding.

Then the war intrudes. Frederic is wounded during a bombardment and sent to a hospital in Milan. There, removed from the front, the world shrinks to white walls, whispered footsteps, and long afternoons. Catherine comes to nurse him, and in that fragile, suspended time, their love takes root fully. It becomes their shelter, their private rebellion against the chaos outside.

They begin to dream, not of glory or victory, but of escape, of a life untouched by war, but as we all know that the world does not easily release those caught in its machinery. Frederic returns to the front, and what he finds is no longer even the illusion of organised order. The Italian army is retreating, the lines collapsing into confusion and fear. Amid the chaos of the retreat from Caporetto, discipline gives way to panic. Frederic witnesses senseless executions carried out by his own side, men shot not for treachery but for being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

In that moment, something in him breaks. The war, which once seemed distant and abstract, reveals itself as meaningless cruelty. Frederic makes a desperate choice. He abandons the army, diving into a river to escape both the enemy and his own commanders. It is not heroism, it is a rebellious refusal. He is done with war.

He returns to Catherine, and together they flee quietly, urgently, across the border into Switzerland. Their escape is almost dreamlike: rowing across a dark lake under the cover of night, leaving behind the world that sought to claim them.

For a brief time, they find peace in the snowy stillness of the mountains. They live simply, waiting for the birth of their child, believing perhaps that they have outrun fate, but writer of book aswellas fate does not allow easy endings.

When the time comes, Catherine goes into labor, and what should be a moment of joy turns into a long, agonizing struggle. Hours stretch into unbearable tension. The child is stillborn. And then, as if that loss were not enough, Catherine herself begins to slip away, hemorrhaging beyond the reach of help.

Frederic stands by, helpless, as the one thing that gave his life meaning is taken from him.

In the end, there are no grand speeches, no dramatic gestures, only silence. Catherine dies, and Frederic, emptied of everything, walks back alone into the rain.

This brings the reader to a stark  truth that love, however profound, cannot shield us from the indifferent forces of the world. Circumstances take their share of loot,  life takes it's share, and what remains is to be quietly endured by those left behind. 🪶 GG 🗡️
